Finding the Perfect Table Size for Your Space

Choosing the right table size is essential for creating a comfortable and functional space. Whether you’re designing a dining area for your home or a commercial space, these guidelines will help ensure your table not only looks great but allows for easy seating and movement around it.

Seating Allowances

To ensure everyone has enough room to dine comfortably, follow these recommendations:

  • Individual Space Per Seat: Allow at least 60–70cm of table perimeter per person for comfortable seating.

    • Example: A 1800mm round table is ideal for 8 people, while a 2400mm rectangle table works perfectly for 8–10 people.

Space Around the Table

It’s just as important to leave adequate space around the table for people to move freely and chairs to be pulled in and out. Here’s what you need:

  • Chair Clearance: Allow at least 75–90cm between the edge of the table and walls, furniture, or other fixed objects. This space ensures chairs can be pulled out easily without obstruction.

  • Walking Space: For high-traffic areas, leave a minimum of 100–120cm clearance around the table to allow people to pass comfortably even when chairs are occupied.

Table Shapes and Room Sizes

  • Round Tables: Ideal for square or small spaces, round tables encourage conversation and can seat more people in a smaller footprint.

    • Example: A 1500mm round table works well in a dining area with a minimum space of 3300mm x 3300mm.

  • Rectangle Tables: Great for larger, rectangular spaces, these tables provide clear seating arrangements and work well in long rooms.

    • Example: A 2400mm x 1000mm rectangle table fits perfectly in a room of at least 4200mm x 2800mm.

  • Pill-Shaped Tables: These are a stylish compromise between round and rectangle tables, offering soft edges and ample seating while maintaining flow in tighter spaces.

How to Use the Table

  1. Seating: The recommended seating is based on ensuring enough space for each person to sit comfortably with room to pull out chairs.

  2. Room Size: The minimum room size includes allowances for chair clearance (75–90cm) and walking space (100–120cm in high-traffic areas).

Pro Tip

Don’t forget to factor in lighting and decor! Overhead pendant lights should align with the table’s shape and size, while rugs should extend at least 60–70cm beyond the table’s edge to accommodate pulled-out chairs.
